I wonder if there is a biological component to intolerance. Tolerance may require superior intelligence and will to circumvent whatever innate flaw causes this bias. Did distant ancestors who came across diseased or disfigured or otherwise different beings, shun or harm them to promote survival of the greater good of their group? Or is treating The-Other with less dignity and reverance due to the innate hierarchical demands of social beings?

There is a sorry amount of bigotry left in the world. One way of surmounting this ugliness is by carrying an empathy toward all things. Within the margins of reason are avenues of hope that go beyond hope.

Spilling Disaster

Intelligence and kindness hallmark tolerance,
an accomplishment born by the compassionate.
When tolerance opens to the dawn of possibilities
there is hope for transcendent insight.

Forbearance demands courage because differences can appall.
Shadows of intolerance inevitably produces ugly conflicts.
Intolerance is slavery that breeds hatred, spilling disaster
that leads into its own heart of darkness.
When immutable circumstances fetter, tolerance promotes harmony.

Gathering tolerance through empathy
we find the strengths of moderation.   We follow the middle way.
Within the margins of tolerance we step into the light of hope,
the quiet brook of kindness.
