The causes of hatred are legion--fear, envy, ignorance, irrationality, the drive toward dominance, an instinctive prejudice--to list a few.

In his journal, Marcus Aurelius suggests that it is in our power whether or not to bear hatred toward another. He believed that everyone participates in the same divine intelligence, so that to hate or to act against one another is contrary to Nature.

If we act responsibily, therefore, we will summon our inner strengths and let go of the poisons of hate. It is a waste of our efforts, emotions, and, more importantly, time.

Wreaking Violence

People mired
in the darkness of rage
let hatred govern
in society's myriad
nether crevices.
They are cockroaches
                hiding
from the light of reason.

The poison of hate
squanders lifetimes,
ravages the mind--
worse when cemented
by self-righteousness.

Hatred is active
ignorance
that wreaks
violence
upon the soul.
Humanity is devalued
when hatred
sours rationality.
