Quieting our ever-busy external selves, being able to stop and turn inward, does take practice, but is worth checking out.

"Start by sitting comfortably and breathing normally," new Zen students are told. "Then focus on your breath; count each one in your mind."

Focusing on one thing long enough and everything vanishes. You are a point-of-awareness. I think it is important to bear in mind that meditation isn't an escape from the real world; it's an escape to it!

Centerpoint

If we can find our still, quiet center--
where heart and soul breathe free--
here facets of the rational
face diamonds of imagination.

At this centerpoint,
myriad winds of freedom
balance our stony
path of responsibility.
