Over the years I've attempted to understand love from as close to an objective view as possible. Whether this was an attempt at bravery or foolishness is an open question. Since there are at least as many flavors and definitions of love as persons who risk this adventure, my early attempts were no more than the exercises of a callow heart.

I remember watching a documentary about people helping people--during a natural disaster of some nature--when it sunk in. The kindness that the volunteers showed toward others--some were total strangers--was as close as I'd ever come to realizing the ultimate statement that love is one of our deepest truths. Love, as a touchstone of virtue, as soul-wisdom, as a profound abyss that the soul beholds.

The Soul's Zenith

Love is kindness, humility, sincerity.
Among the touchstones of virtue,
it remains a first wisdom and zenith of the soul.

It amplifies life's delights.
All things are heightened in its blush,
deepened in its embrace.
Whenever love exists, joy blossoms.

Love is understanding and tolerant patience.
Love is civilization's foundation.
Ultimately it is truth.
